The Basics

Suitable for students who wish to fly as a hobby, an RPL (A) allows you to fly a light, single-engine aeroplane and take family and friends on scenic flights around the local area. An RPL can also be a kicking off point for future endorsements or licence types.

Training Requirements

  • Minimum 25 hours flight training
  • 1 theory exam covering 6 subjects
  • RPL flight test
  • Train full time or part time
  • Be at least 16 years old at time of flight test
  • Flight training costs start at $13,895 (for minimum hours flown in a C172 aeroplane).

More Information

The RPL allows you to fly on local flights within a short distance from your home airport. This licence is ideal for taking family and friends on short scenic flights and showing off your skills as a licenced pilot. An RPL is a great starting point for those on a budget and wanting to get into aviation for fun without the need to fly to different locations.

The PPL is a licence to travel. Imagine being able to jump into an aeroplane and transport yourself across Australia whenever you want, the possibilities are endless. The PPL will require training for longer cross country routes, where you will learn how to navigate the aircraft and arrive safely at different airports. The theory exam is similar to the RPL, although more in depth and will cover the navigation component.

Once you gain your RPL, you can always upgrade to a PPL or CPL at a later date.

The first step is to book in for a trial introductory flight where you will be able to try your hand at flying with an experienced and qualified flight instructor where you can ask questions about which licence is most suited to you. It's never too early or late to start learning either, flying is a great pastime for all ages. If you are enthusiastic and committed to learning, you are suited to flying, it's not rocket science!

To obtain a recreational aeroplane licence, you must pass a 2 hour theory exam. This exam contains questions from the following subjects:

  • Human Factors
  • Aerodynamics
  • Aircraft General Knowledge
  • Meteorology
  • Operations Performance and Planning
  • Air Law

There are two main options for you when it comes to the theory aspect of your licence

  • Learn in a classroom atmosphere. Free from distractions, our intensive theory course allows students to focus on their studies, covering all subjects in a 3 week block. With the support and expertise of our instructors, this course will see you prepared as possible to tackle the theory exam
  • If you are lucky enough to be the kind of person who is self-motivated, then self-study may suit you. We can organise study materials for you to tackle around work and other commitments. Students can also book in for one-on-one tutoring as required.

You will need to obtain the following in order to gain your licence, as required by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA). Information on these, and how to complete your applications is available with our course information package.

  • Aviation Reference Number (ARN)
  • Class 2 Aviation Medical Certificate
  • Aviation Security ID Card (ASIC)
